5-11-10 UPDATE!
Hi folks,
Thanks to everyone who came out last week to help get the house underway -
Elmira College student for building the house deck and part of the shed
Women Build participants (Lowes, Local 1000 Women of Steel and Corning Inc.'s Society of Women Engineers; Corning Credit Union) for the incredible job framing the house
the carpenter's union (local #281) for putting up the trusses.
The exterior walls are up and roof trusses are place. High winds on Sat. prevented us from getting the sheathing on the roof.
The primary goal for the next week or so is to get the sheathing and shingles on the roof.
Regular work days now will be Wednesdays & Saturdays. Our primary need for volunteers the next few days (Wed, 5/12; Sat., 5/15; Wed., 5/19) will be for skilled volunteers who can help get the roof on.
If you haven't been to the build site yet, it's at 266 Bridge St., right next to the RR tracks.
Regards,
Bruce

CONSTRUCTION IS STARTING!
Planning has been underway for the build projects for this year. We are going to busy!
First, we will be building a construction storage shed at the ReStore site on Route 414 in Corning. The main building there will be done by a combination of the students from the Ithaca College Campus Chapter and local State Farm agents to celebrate the successful completion of the requirements for Ithaca College HFH to receive a $5,000 grant from State Farm. Combined with the $5,000 raised by the students, SESC Habitat will be receiving $10,000 for our building fund! This group day is scheduled for Satuday, April 24th.
Then work will start on the first house we will be building this year at 266 Bridge St. in Corning. Keep checking bac for updates on the progress there.
Here's the first posting from Bruce Peffley, our construction team leader:
Hi folks,
Here's the current plan for the several weeks.
Set forms and pour concrete pad for a new construction shop area at the Restore. (W, 4/14, 8:00 AM ; rain date F, 4/16 or Sat, 4/17)
Assuming the foundation (at 266 Bridge St.) gets completed, we'll start working regularly on Wednesdays beginning 4/21- our initial tasks are to complete the center support beam; floor joists and decking; foundation drainage, radon piping, plastic film & gravel in crawl space. The goal is to be ready for framing the exterior walls during the Women's Build on F, 5/7.
If you're available to help supervise, a group of Ithaca College students and State Farm employees are going to be working on building the construction shop on Sat., 4/24. (The IC student chapter was awarded a grant from State Farm to aid our projects.)

Bruce

WANTED! Unwanted, lonely LEGOS!
Southeastern Steuben County Habitat for Humanity is asking for donations of unwanted LEGOS. These Legos will be used in annual house building contests to help raise awareness of Habitat for Humanity's mission. The first event will be held in Ithaca by the Ithaca College Campus Chapter (sponsored by SESC Habitat) during the annual Act! Speak! Build! Week, a national collegiate initiative for Habitat for Humanity International, in April. The Legos will again be used in the fall for a house building contest here in Corning. If you are storing a box of Legos and have no use for them in the future, please call 936-4444 or email habitatcorning@clarityconnect.com.
Homeowner Applications Available
Applications are now available for low-income families interested in becoming Habitat for Humanity homeowners in the Corning - Addison area. Application deadline is March 31, 2010. Criteria for selection include a need for a decent and affordable house, the ability to repay a no-profit, no-interest mortgage, and the willingness to partner with Habitat by working 500 hours of “sweat equity.” A Habitat for Humanity Homebuyer Workshop will be held Saturday, March 13 from 10 to 11:30 in the Southeast Steuben County Library Conference Room. For an application or more information, contact Southeastern Steuben County Habitat for Humanity at 607-936-4444.
Mid-Winter Construction Update
Even though the weather outside is frightful -- cold, snowy and generally gloomy -- construction planning is heating up. Plans are being made for this year's house build to be located in Corning. We are looking for people interested in serving as site hosts, site supervisors and crew leaders for this next construction season.
Site hosts are those indispensible people who help volunteers sign-in upon arrival and make sure everyone is happily occupied throughout the day. They are the "hosts" of the party, so to speak. No construction experience is needed for this job. Once a month to every six weeks on a Saturday or a Wednesday is all that is needed timewise.
Site supervisors do need to have some construction experience. They are the site managers for the day, making sure the jobs lined up for the day are undertaken, volunteers all suitably "employed," and questions are being answered.
Crew Leaders -- and members -- have a specific task. For example, the plumbing crew. These folks have an assigned task and work to finish that particular phase. Experience again is needed, be it plumbing, drywall finishing, electrical, etc.
For more information, please contact the office at 936-4444 or email habitatcorning@clarityconnect.com.
